How to plan a new bathroom

According to HSBC, a new bathroom can add an average of £2500* onto the value of your house. It’s important to get your renovation project right to ensure you get maximum bang for your buck. Here are our tips for how to successfully plan your new bathroom.

Be inspired

Pinterest and Instagram are great sources of inspiration – just look at the #bathroomsofinsta tag for instant design ideas. There is something for everyone, whether you want a white spa-like bathroom or a dark, calming retreat, you’ll find something that suits your taste.

Prioritise your wants & needs

The easiest way to figure out what is essential in your new bathroom is to walk through your morning and evening routines and identify what’s missing, what’s in the way, and what would be nice to have. Is your shower awkward to get in to? Is the floor too cold to walk on first thing in the morning? Is it easy to keep tidy?

Be careful if you’re thinking of removing your bath if it’s the only one you have as this can devalue your home.

Plan your project

Once you have an idea of what you’d like, it’s time to plan as you’ve never planned before! Now is the moment to finalise your budget and set a timescale to make sure there are no nasty surprises once your project starts. Get your tape measure out and plan your space – you may want to get a bathroom studio involved who can help you visualise your new space using design software.

At this stage, it’s a good idea to identify various tradespeople who can help you complete your project. From plumbers to electricians, tilers to fabricators, it’s always useful to ask for recommendations from people you know to make sure they’re reliable and trustworthy.

Technical details

We know technical details can seem daunting to plan but they will make all the difference to your bathroom. You need to consider where pipes and electrical access points are to make it easy to plumb or fit new sanitaryware and furnishings (towel rails, shaver points etc.). Also check that you have adequate ventilation and what may be behind adjoining walls. Your builder or project manager can help with this so don’t feel like you have to do it alone!

Finishing touches

Now is the time you can put your own stamp on your bathroom. From lighting to tiling, there are so many ways to make your space come to life. Don’t forget storage space – there are so many unique solutions on the market that you can hide your trinkets, soaps, and smellies or have them on full display.

You can also choose your vanity tops around your sink which is where we come in! We can also provide shower trays, wall cladding, and flooring to make your space totally unique. We can send free samples or you can book an appointment to view samples and slabs in our showroom. We make the process easy so it’s one less thing to worry about!

The final thing to do is book the work in and get through the chaos of building work – if you’re working with a good studio you will hardly notice them. Once it’s over, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy a nice hot bath on a chilly winter evening, or a cool shower during a Great British heatwave… it’ll be your little sanctuary of bliss.
